A leadership style generally results from the way in which a manager or leader applies his personality and temperament to the people and business decisions he manages. In a retail business, the approach a store manager takes in leading can significantly impact the culture for both employees and customers.

 

Task Direction

Retail leaders must typically balance two key factors of management -- task direction and people management. In a retail environment, autocratic, task-oriented leaders may succeed in getting employees to complete work effectively and efficiently. This is especially key in high-volume stores. A task-oriented leader also may have the ability to quickly react and implement decisions related to customer problems and operational dilemmas. In stores with seasonal products, for example, leaders often must delegate merchandising tasks to associates.

Culture Risks

When a retail manager is excessively task-oriented, he tends to put little effort into the people side of leadership. This can cause employees to feel as though the manager doesn't care about them beyond what they produce. In the long run, this can lead to employee burnout, lack of team chemistry and low employee morale. These factors subsequently contribute to high turnover, which is pervasive in many retail environments. In stores with significant temporary staff during the holidays, an overly task-oriented manager may struggle to get permanent and temporary employees to collaborate well together.

 

Consideration of People

Some retail managers emphasize relationship ability in their style. They intentionally spend time interacting with employees on a personal level and developing bonds with them. In a retail environment with a small number of employees, a relationship-oriented, participative manager may achieve better results in building a team-oriented, fun culture. Team-centered workers are more likely to fill in for coworkers or pick up the slack when others have an off-day. A positive workplace may contribute to a better environment for customers as well, since employees tend to treat customers the way they are treated by leaders.

Finding Balance

Successful retail managers usually balance employee relationships with task-direction. Employees ultimately work more effectively and efficiently if they feel the manager cares about them, but also communicates and maintains performance expectations. An overly relational-oriented manager can fall short when employees feel little pressure to perform. The business may become too focused on group harmony and less focused on meeting the needs of customers. Happy retail employees also find balance in serving customers and completing other tasks efficiently, such as stocking shelves, checking inventory and cleaning.

Retail Management Styles: Retail management styles vary from store to store and manager to manager. However, they all fall into some basic styles of management.  Each work, though some better than others, but since employees are also all different, you may find a style that works with one, doesn’t with another. Here are some basic retail management styles:

Participatory Style: A manager, who is a participator, gives his or her employee’s tasks to complete or a group of employees a project, explaining to each individual what their part should be from start to finish.

Directing Style: This is a more “top-down” management style. The directing style manager gives specific instruction on what, how, when, where, and why: what their people need to do, how they should do it, where they should do it, why they’re doing it, and when it must be finished.

Teamwork Style: Managers who employ this style utilizes the best of his or her team to use their knowledge to complete projects. He or she knows that teams are usually able to solve problems more quickly than individuals, which means that outcomes can far exceed expectations.

Work Team Concept may be effective in managing the Stores.

The Team will have members having  mutual  accountability,colective work products and a shared leadership.

Also Management by Wandering About(MBWA) may also be useful.

In the group setting he or she makes sure each employee understands their role in the big picture. He or she also asks for input from the employees on what they are doing and how they can get it done.

Employees managed this way tend to feel valued and that they have ownership in the project. They also have a good understanding of the tasks and why they need to be done, partially from the instruction, partially because they are encouraged to ask questions.

Directing Style: This is a more “top-down” management style. The directing style manager gives specific instruction on what, how, when, where, and why: what their people need to do, how they should do it, where they should do it, why they’re doing it, and when it must be finished. There is no room for discussion or input.

Managers who employ this style should be unambiguous about the what, when, where, why and how and are very specific in their expectations.

Teamwork Style: Managers who employ this style utilizes the best of his or her team to use their knowledge to complete projects. He or she knows that teams are usually able to solve problems more quickly than individuals, which means that outcomes can far exceed expectations.

A manager of this type is willing to give the team credit for success instead of taking it for him or her self. This manager is like a coach, giving help where the team needs it but allowing them to find their way to success.

I would suggest to use both Directing and Teamwork style in combination, because you will be facing different kind of personalities to deal with and adhering to one style may not be fruitful.
