What is more important when employers are looking for employees, Experience or Qualifications.

I have40+ years in engineering from apprenticeship to management, all of the positions I apply for I could do standing on my head, but I feel that the lack of "graduate" status lets me down Why with my experience should this be? I would be an asset to the firms I apply too.

My opinion on this question , is that experience an qualification are going side by side ,and you can’t         separate one from anther specially in this era. In some fields of jobs  just like Maintenance engineering experience is important  because it is shorten  delay time of problem solving and in the same time we need qualified employee to be good enough to be update with new technologies  be produced by  factories and companies.

The main thing the employer will notice that how much is your consistancy level in your previous companies. If there are two applicants  where one is having2+2+1 experience in differnt companies and the other one is having4 years continuous or straight experience with one company, the second applicant will be selected for sure because of his dedication and the consistency to that one company. This way the recruiters measure if you will be an asset or not  for them. All other things will be counted as secondary .

Actually experience polishes ones abilities and skills. Without education, person require years to understand processes and under laying facts while education greatly speeds up this process. So a balance of education with required experience (depend upon parameters of job, if personal errors matters alot during job then experienced is better otherwise educated one).

Both complements each other. Qualification is a basis for professional development in the work field. Bringing fresh business and work ideas, as well as routine in performing of everyday tasks is the result of experience. For achieving of good work performance and results, a good basis must be set primarily.

I will say both complements each other. Actually its the context which makes either of the one important. I agree with the fact that the practical knowledge can not come through the academic knowledge. You can only predict the heat by sitting on your table, but you can't feel the intensity of the same. You have to make decisions every now and then, and better your experience, better your decision. However that does not mean that academic knowledge or qualification are of no worth. Actually your qualification provide you a broader skill set that supports your decision and fine tunes it. You can always give a logic when you have a good qualification. So which is more important is difficult to say. Its depend on the business of the organization, life stage of the organization, its policy, sometimes external factors and many others.
