The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network protocol that enables a server to automatically assign an IP address to a computer from a defined range of addresses, which usually consists of a subnet or scope configured for a given network.

Configuration of DHCP varies according to the server & the OS used in it.

  • In a RHEL environment, you can configure the DHCP Server by creating/modifying the configuration file (/etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf) present in the DHCP package.
  • In a Windows Server environment, login as the local Administrator>>Add a role- DHCP Server and complete the Setup Wizard. Create DHCP scopes, using the New Scope Wizard from Server Manager>>Tools-DHCP console. Provide the IP Address Range, Exclusions and Delay, Lease Duration, & Domain and DNS Servers. Activate Scope and Authorise it.

The DHCP client requests an IP address by broadcasting a DHCPDiscover message to the local subnet. The client is offered an address when a DHCPserver responds with a DHCPOffer message containing an IP address and configuration information for lease to the client.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information

To configure the DHCP scope, you must log on as administrator. Configuring the DHCP scope supplies the DHCP client with the range of IP addresses from which the server draws from and a subnet mask to be assigned to clients.

Computer networks can be of any form like a LAN, WAN etc. If you are connected to a local LAN or an internet connection, the IP addresses form the basis of communication over computer networks. An IP address is the identity of a host or a computer device while connected to any network. In most of the cases when you connect your PC to a LAN or internet, you will observe  that the IP address and other information like subnet mask etc are assigned to your computer automatically. Dynamic host configuration protocol

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

As the name suggests, DHCP is used to control the network configuration of a host through a remote server. DHCP functionality comes installed as a default feature in most of the contemporary operating systems. DHCP is an excellent alternative to the time-consuming manual configuration of network settings on a host or a network device.

DHCP works on a client-server model. Being a protocol, it has it’s own set of messages that are exchanged between client and server.
