Personally, I think public wi-fi is not safe for every time. It depends on wi-fi provider. If you are in hotel, any government place or airport or any mall, these places are safe to use wi-fi. But, if you are connecting with any unknown network then it may be not safe for you. Because most of private networks with no security passwords can try to steal your data and important information. I am Ethical hacker and I know very well about it. If I want to steal your phone data or any online password, then I will offer you open wi-fi and when you will connect with my wi-fi router then I will use any tool which can show your whole traffic to me like wireshark. Every single thing which you do in your device, it will reflect on my system as a traffic. Other than this there are lots of things which any hacker can do with your device. So please careful at the time of free wi-fi.

Big Security Issue. Some users could be using the network to spread viruses, and this can not only cause lag, but put your device at serious and permanent risk.

If you haven't set your firewall to public, and not all operating systems prompt you to do, you could be leaking passwords and bank account numbers over the network. Also, any shared folders on your device are open for others to see.

On a hard-wired internet connection, information traveling to and from your computer is encrypted, yet on a WiFi network it isn't. While this can lead to sensitive information leaks, it can also allow other users passwords to your social networks. These hackers then spread harm through your Facebook or Twitter account, which then you have to fix in your free time.

I agree with the rest answer

There are a few big problems with using a public Wi-Fi network. The open nature of the network allows for snooping, the network could be full of compromised machines, or most worryingly the hotspot itself could be malicious.

It's ok if it was from a certified source like hotels or airports or even at cafe , but if you access an unknown wifi without security then you will be at risk even if you closed all opened ways to your device.

Every thing is Wi (Wireless) and nothing is Fi (fidelity)

nothing wrong with wireless , because mobile is wireless , Internet from satellite is wireless , TV is wireless

wired connection can be hacked , and wireless can be hacked

so one with more security roles (depend on your experiance and fininshal ) is the one that will wen

wired is more diffecalt to hack but more expensive if you want to make full bandwidth (using fiber optic with Leased line )

if your company work in nuclear weapons use wired otherwise use wireless with encryption

What do you think if you are working in nuclear company , do you Prefer wired or wireless ?

some times you have more control over wireless, and some times you have more control over wired (i saw a movie about russian with submarine and they cut the wire under ocean and reconnected, you may have under earth digging machines that can make the same, so what is the solution, may be short waves can be more secure ie use wire and wireless)

Public Wi-Fi is not save! Your data may intercepted by intruders.

pron to rouge access points; man-in-the-middle attacks are likely to happen and all your traffic could be clear to unauthorized parties.
