Very big effect and it is used more in education

The following points summarize the benefits of social media:

  • Social Media is like a data factory for anyone that wants to learn anything new
  • It enables Social learning through interaction with other peers
  • There is abundance of experts that have knowledge flowing day in and day out and networking with such individuals has become a probable cause that is much easier to undertake.
  • Multiple and purposeful discussions can take place on Social Media through groups, forums, chats and so on.
  • The more one uses the internet and Social Media the more easier it becomes to evaluate and scan for information.
  • Social Media may help one gain some transferable skills such as typing networking and generally being technologically savvy

Needless to say that with any improvements comes disadvantages and in this case;

  • It is very easy to wander on the internet and get distracted from one's learning goal
  • According to Mark Connolly, University of Wisconsin alluded that students who use social networking tools might pay significant cognitive costs. In light of this, he adds on to say that these web services simultaneously seize and fragment our attention thereby subverting higher order reasoning processes including the kind of focus, concentration and persistence necessary for critical thinking and intellectual development.
  • Prolonged internet use may lead to interactive, repetitive and addictive tendencies that will permanently change the way one's brain functions.
