Considerable amount of preparation, cost and consideration is needed to organize formal company trainings.  A formal venue is required. The preparation involves coming up with a relevant topic, which is then properly structured and matched with appropriate resource speakers. Participation is limited to those who really needed the training and rigorous evaluation of the participants is conducted prior.  Evaluation and completion certificates are also given out.  This activity may be outsourced depending on the topic, costs and capabilities of the company.

Informal trainings on the other hand are more often than not, impromptu, or requires lesser amount of cost and time to prepare.  There is less structure in an informal training and topics could be from a wide array of workplace functions and responsibilities.  Some orientation trainings are performed on-the-job and can be considered informal.   It could also be done in an informal setting like the actual workplace or in an office conference room.  Resource speakers may or may not be needed and could be sourced from existing staff within or maybe from another department.  It almost always deals with handling day-to-day activities for new employees, or for employees who transfer to a new department or introduction and awareness training for a new system, or hand-over training for a replacement.

Both, however, could contribute to the growth and bolster the careers of the learners to new heights.

Formal training are those trainings officially provided by the company wherein they schedule, they request participants and provide certificates after it was completed. These are trainings required by the company or necessary in order to develop or harness the employees' capabilities. An example is a Sales Skills training on a Company in the sales and marketing industry. They are necessary to improve their stats or their employees' sales techniques that will eventually benefit the company as well.

Now, informal trainings are trainings that are provided by the company that are impromptu or anyone can attend. Most of the time, they are provided for self-enhancement of their employees. It is more inclined to the self-development of the person that will help him/her on her present job or in his/her future endeavors. These are trainings that are much more beneficial to the employees rather that the company though it will still go both ways. Also, some still provides certificates after but most of the time they don't.
