Let's not go by the book.

Succession planning in most of the organization has following steps:

  • Identify the top performer in a department.
  • Entrust him with training a couple of performers just like him.
  • Once you think you have another one who can perform just as well as the original one you identified, fire the first one as he's getting too much from the company.
