Hello,

I tend to think of the responsibilities of mechanical engineers as working within three specialties.

Mechanical engineers are responsible for heating, cooling, ventilation and air conditioning systems.  Their responsibilities are well beyond occupant comfort and include proper air quality for the variety of spaces within a healthcare system including outpatient exam, procedure and operating rooms spaces.  If products are manufactured for consumption, they must be familiar with governing bodies standards similar to cGMP and USP797.  Humidity ranges in operating rooms is a concern, and must be planned for appropriately.  They must understand the impact the building envelope has on the internal environment.  Chiller design and configuration is essential as is the boiler system.  Is a cogeneration plant desireable?

Mechanical engineers are responsible for the fire protection systems.  They need to ensure adequate fire sprinkler coverage and compliance with NFPA requirements.  They need to understand the implications of wet systems versus dry systems versus chemical systems and appropriate applications of each.

Mechanical engineers are responsible for the plumbing systems including domestic water, sanitary sewer, hot water, steam, condensate, and hydronic systems.  They need to understand the transfer of heat and acceptable parameters for providing domestic water in a healthcare setting.  Will there be reverse osmosis systems?  Will deionized water be used?  Is water reclamation a concern?  They need to be familiar with codes and standards for purifying systems and appropriate temperatures of water or steam in healthcare settings.

Systems need to be designed for longstanding use and service by the owner.  Can variable air volume boxes be serviced?  What valves are specified?  Is the system to be planned for future growth?  Is the owner interested in minimizing initial cost or long-term value?

I am happy to provide more information than just these brief, initial thoughts.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me a or +1715.897.3315.

Kind Regards,

James D. Colburn, P.E.
