Transit time refers to total number of days, journey starts to end. ie. once shipment is booked through air/sea no of days it will take to delivery the goods at final place of delivery.
Free time, refers to detention or demurrage free depending upon the negotiation while freight booking... free time can be given by shipping line for export stuffing right from the time container is out from depot/port to client premises or when it comes to import consignee prefer to take the delivery after some of days vsl arrival, due to non completion of import clearance documentation or warehouse space is not confirmed, perhaps its own reason. it can be 7 /10/14/25 days whichever can be higher...
Point to the noted, such freebies are loss making for container operators, which ultimately reduced the container turn around time...so most of the shipping lines only offer such freebies to volume clients

In simple terms, free time is nothing but grace period (days) provided for completing local importation procedure, offloading the cargo in your warehouse and returning the empty container to the liner.
Free time generally vary from liner to liner and on relationship basis.
