In-order to start a catering business, we would need the following.

1. A feasible market for the niche/cuisine you have selected.

2. Proper Permits and Licenses for the business.

3. A place owned/rented/leased with sufficient kitchen/storage space.

4. Catering equipments and appliances.

5. Trained staffs.

6. Proper branding which reflects even with the uniform of staffs.

7. Create a menu, test the menu and finally set-up prices. menu (Most of your equipments and staffs will depend on your menu).

8. A Van

9. Clients

10. Publicity

11. Knowledge about competitors.

First of all I would recommend you to study the market you are going to work. Learn and study your competitors and also the new trends in the field. Study your target group. Their purchase capacity, their likes and dislikes, etc. Be prepared and recicle your knowledges with new recipes, new techniques, etc.

Catering is a very challenging and demanding job, one that requires you to be good in both many and varied ways. You need to aim to be, a good cook, a good communicator, a good sales person, but most of all a good business person and never forget that is what you are first and foremost – a business person.

If you can’t see yourself in these roles then maybe you should think again about catering as your next career move. However, if you like the idea of being your own boss, living in a world where every day is different, and where you really can be in charge of your own destiny, then I can truly recommend catering to you in its many and varied forms.
