Would you disregard/defend a good professional CV based on hearsay (gossip) by a person (who comes across as credible, but with ill intent)?

In some cases - jealousy gets the upperhand and the gossipmonger (believed to be credible, but with a hidden agenda) puts in a bad word on someone with good references and is a strong candidate for a position you consider them for. I've seen it happen and spoke out on this particular incident as it is purely unprofessional to malign another in favour of yourself or maliciousness.

we sometimes miss working with and hiring professionals just because of their race,gender,name...etc. i worked in USA,and middle east and have been travelling a round as part of my job.

descrimination does exist in many types and forms, we have accepted it as part of office politics.

you see company's in dubai as an example with all employees from the same ethnic group, then the ceo leaves and a new ceo from a different ethnic group comes and really i have seen it, people start loosing jobs and new employees from a different ethnic group are becoming more dominant.

i accept it as part of life, but i feel it is moraly wrong.

No I would like to prefer the interview of the candidate and measure his caliber rather just rejecting him based on hearsay.

Businesses regularly deal with a number of risks.  However, when it comes to hiring organizations wishes to eliminate slightest of doubts about the credibility of the candidate.  Though the gossip monger is propagating false data it creates doubt in the mind of the recruiter and unfortunately no recruiter would take the risk of selecting a candidate with doubtful credentials.  in fact it is a loss to the candidate because for business the individual is not indispensable.  they can always get a different candidate for the job.

Unfortunately, there is no remedy to this issue.

Thanks Praveen and Anil - both interesting answers. As with the truth - it always comes out.

This off-course opens up the person who spread false rumours to a lawsuit that will not only cost them their reputation, but also cause a dent in their finances. :)
