Social media is a primary vehicle of communication today, and because much of that communication is public, it’s no surprise some recruiters and hiring managers are tuning in. Social recruiting is at the intersection of recruitment and social media.

The Success of Social recruiting adoption is the job seeker responsibility; The information provided online about job background and accomplishments should also be consistent. The story job seeker tell on each social site should be pretty much the same, although it’s fine to adapt the material for that site.

As an employer I will not only be checking candidate Bayt.com. I might also check Facebook, or even Twitter and Google+.  We are looking for information that could possibly give him or her an advantage.

Of course. Social media platforms have proven their wide-range effectiveness in reaching different audiences, which in turn makes the employment process easier and more effective.

Social media hiring has its own pros and cons. An individual who advertises himself professionally and glamorously will surely be rated higher, although if that is only to impress the recruiter it surely can be faked. I would suggest for a Skype interview/one-on-one/panel interview shortlisting the individual in the social media region.

In my experience when I hired a programmer to be in my team, there are a lot of pros/cons when it comes to professional application for the job.

PROS:

  • Social Media recruitment is good, but not idealistic for a professional approach. (Job Application)
  • Social Media can be used to answer queries or if the employer wants to check the applicant for visibility, background, and other miscellaneous things.
  • It can also connect other applicants suitable for the job
  • It increases visibility of company that are hiring
  • Social Media can also be used to advertise the company as well as job post

CONS:

  • Too many applicants not suitable for the job
  • Random people asking questions even if not related to the post
  • Vulnerable to bashers
  • A lot of people will comment on a post making it tiresome to read everything
  • Users will tend to apply in social media using the comment section and not apply anymore to the intended instruction. (Like sending their CV thru the assigned email)

There are pros/cons in every job hiring, but doing something about it is where the fun and challenge is.

Ideally yes social media recruitment is effective in today's age, but with anything there are both advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion the advantages far more out way the disadvantages.

Listed is why Social media is effective;

  • The Employer can target specific job candidates on sites such as Bayt.com, (URL removed due to policy violation. Please contact support for further information.).
  • Employers have more access to international candidates that possess niche market skills (Scarce skills / Experienced candidates).
  • Employers can gather a lot of information on a candidate than they would with a resume and / or motivational letter.
  • The task of finding jobs has been made easier for job seekers unlike in previous years where they needed to go through piles of newspaper job ads.

On the other hand there are certain pitfalls that Social media brings to the table as well which are as follows;

  • Poor grammatical errors, spellings and other behaviors can be scanned through by any potential employer which can be detrimental to a job seeker's search.
  • Social Media sites may not always give a complete overview of the employee or employer and either side may miss out on great staff or employer.
  • Information accessed through Social Media can lead to cases of discrimination that may or may not be traced.
  • Information can be overwhelming if one has to stream through each and every potential job seeker's profile.

Although i agree, the best method or result is for a direct interview, however the selection process before the interview can be daunting. social media can help the recruiter or HR professional to truly get to know the individual much more on a personal level, not so much qualifications but will the individual be well suited for the organizational culture, which sometime much for effective than hiring based on "stated skills" alone.

Of course. Currently, not everyone might have TV, but they have a smartphone and at least one type of Social media app inside. Which means, when employer announce a new vacancy, it would be effective tool to reach more candidates. Plus, some social media apps (ex. Instagram) offers targeting focus groups by a desired specifics of candidates.
