it helps you to organize your work, Editing and transporting selected objects to other drawings or working on the same drawing is easy, for eg, in plab of a buildingyou have done a wall and foundation, in the next drawing you need only walls like to prepare slab drawings you can pick up only walls from previous drawing by isolating (isolate command)walls in the wall layer and draw slab outline drawing.
You will be free of foundations and other stuffs quickly.
other wise you will draw everything on the same layer and same color like white.

Layers is the most important tool in AutoCAD, it makes you organize all items or objects separated, so you can isolate any layer to perform some commands only for the isolated one.

Also it helps the other engineering section to achieve their drawings using the architectural layout as a base, as they can turn off some layers which aren't useful for them.

The layers in AutoCAD is very important in the organization of work as it enables you to labor on one layer without the other by activate it the command bar, In the event of complex plans(great cities ) it acceded the components of the urban tissue in the form of layers and this is very Helper at work

Organize your drawing by assigning objects to layers

When a drawing becomes visually complex, you can hide the objects that you currently do not need to see.

You gain this level of control by organizing the objects in your drawing on layers that are associated with a specific function or a purpose. It might be helpful to think of

layers as clear plastic sheets:

cabinets-

fixtures-

Electrical-

Doors-

Floor Plan-

Use layers to associate objects by their function, to display and hide related objects, and to enforce linetype, color, and other property standards.

It help to organize your job. And you can stabilize the type of the lines in your draw by layer, very useful when you need to print your project.

The layers basically used to keep separate different items in the drawings such as door, wall, ceiling, lights hatch, etc. when you modify one type of entity you can turn off other layers so you will not be disturb other items during modification. thru the layer separation you can create multi purpose drawings such as civil, structural mechanical electrical. whenever need to print you can turn on the specific layers and off other layers. it is really very helpful tool. in layman term layers are like transparent sheets on each sheet you draw different items and see all items at same time from top when you turn on all layers.

The concept of layers is very important in AutoCAD and the correct use of layers can make your drawing much easier to work with. Basically, layers are the computer equivalent of tracing overlays on a drawing board. However, layers are much more powerful because you can have many layers in a single drawing and you can control the visibilitycolour and linetype of layers independently. This makes working with very complicated drawings much more efficient. Layers are effectively a way of ordering your drawing. For example, you may need to create a number of construction lines in a drawing which will not form a part of the finished image. You could create a layer called "Construction" and use this for your construction lines. When the drawing is complete, you could simply turn this layer off so that it can't be seen. The beauty is that you could always turn this layer back on at some future time if modifications to the drawing are required.
