It depends on the type of organisation but in most cases there is one particular index that is the most important - the key performance indicator, you might say.  In a quoted company it would probably be the share price: in a membership charity it might be the change in the number of members.  Depending on the metric there may be various analyses that can be performed.  For example, a share price can be compared to simiilar companies, the stock market as a whole, etc.
