What is normal and alternate braking in aircraft and what is the difference?

Some aircraft have speed brakes which are used in the air (fighter jets) and thrust reverses. However wheel brakes for landing would usually use a back up hydraulic system for the brakes in case of a failure of the normal system, this may be regarded as the alternate braking system.
