the the difference between 

1. He was robbed.

2. His watch was stolen.

To me, 'rob' is used when force is used. E.g. He was robbed

Rob is mostly connected with banks and high amount of money, while stealing could happen from nonorganized gang like a one pearson and to any small materials or money.

Rob and steal both mean ‘take something from someone without permission’.

Rob focuses on the place or person from which the thing is taken

steal is always used together with an object  the object that was taken.

Some men robbed a bank last night .

The gang robbed and killed the shop owne

A difficult question, but I think that the difference between them is rob of private things and steal of public things

we say rob when we mention the person or the place that is stolen  but we say steal when we mention the stolen thing itselffor exampleThe thief robbed the bankThe thief stole the money from the bank

Steal refers to things Rob refers to persons

when one is robbed is when they are swindled or scammed out of their valuables with the use of force or coersion,to steal is when your valuables are taken from you without force or coersion or without your knowledge,they are synonimous.
