The  difference between GPS and GLONASS is that in GLONASS each satelilite has its own frequencies but the same code whereas in GPS als satellites use the same frequencies but have different codes.

GPS is an American System. GLONASS is a Russian System. The disribuation of the satellites diferers from one system to another. So if you want to achieve a good acuracy, you should use both systems because you would have a better coverage of satellites.

Both GPS and GLONASS are satellite based navigation systems. GPS was introduced in 1978 by United States and GLONASS in 1982 by Soviet Union. Over the year's research have been pioneered to have devices with both the GPS and GLONASS features. Range measurements in both the systems rely on microwave signals transmitted by satellite.

Each satellite in both the GPS and GLONASS systems transmits at a rate of 50 bits per second and communicate positioning information to mobile devices on the earth. Due to this slow speed it takes more time to obtain the information, to avoid this problem A-GPS and A-GLONASS systems have been designed.

Both A-GPS and A-GLONASS obtain assitance data at higher speed of about 100 Mbps from the wireless communication network(e.g. LTE base station,GSM/CDMA base station). This makes mobile devices obtain positioning information faster.

GPS was created and realized by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and was originally operated with 24 satellites. It became fully operational in 1994. Each GPS satellite continuously transmits a microwave radio signal composed of two carriers, three to four codes, and a navigation message. GPS applies the code division multiple access (CDMA) principle, and as such, each GPS satellite emits a different Pseudo Random Noise (PRN) code. GPS was originally developed as a military system, but was made available to civilians as well. However, to keep a military advantage, the U.S. DoD provides two levels of GPS positioning and timing services: the Precise Positioning Service (PPS) for military use and the Standard Positioning Service (SPS) for everyone. GPS is currently undergoing a system modernization which will result in the improvement of the performance of GPS services. GLONASS is a radio-based satellite navigation system operated for the Russian government by the Russian Aerospace Defense Force. It complements and provides an alternative to GPS and is currently the only other fully-operational alternative navigation system in operation with global coverage and similar precision. Each satellite transmits the same PRN code but at different frequencies. GLONASS had achieved 100% global coverage with a full orbital constellation of 24 satellites. The GLONASS satellites' designs have undergone several upgrades, with the latest version being GLONASS-K.

Both are GNSS.

GPS is control by USA whearas GLONASS is control by Russia.

GPS Space Segment: The GPS constellation is formed by 30 satellites, with quasi-circular orbits, located between 20000km and 20500km from the Earth center. Four to eight satellites from the GPS constellation can be seen anywhere at a sight angle greater than 15 degrees.

GLONASS Space Segment: The GPS constellation is formed by 24 satellites, with quasi-circular orbits, located at 19100km  from the Earth center. Satellites are called "Ouragan"  M, K1, and K2.

GPS is slightly better than GLONASS overall, but due to the different positioning of the GLONASS satellites, GLONASS has better accuracy at high latitudes (far north or south).

Both are the satellite navigation systems. GPS was started by US Defence and GLONASS by Russian defence.

GALILEO by europe is expected to be functional in 2016. BAIDEU AND IRNSS were launched by China and India respectively but only functional to local level.
