Question is pretty ambiguous. There are number of different categories in online communities based on either social, interest or professional elements. It does not make sense to recommend any unless I know the background of a person what he likes or what professional skills he carries.

there is a list of online communities like Facebook, Twitter, bdjobs, flickr, google+, linkedin, etc. But it depends upon your requirements to join any community. Like Facebook for socialism, LinkedIn for Education purposes.
