What is the real merchandising role ?

Merchandising is a valuable department that serves as an interface between the buyer and an exporter, such that the entire product cycle is well managed at the right time, right place and in the required quality per the Standard operating procedures. Real role of merchandising is to be the bridge and support all facets of a product lifecycle right from inception till consumption.

Basically Merchandising is face of the company, they are the driver of what are you gonna sell in your store. they are ear and eyes of the company, they keep their ear and eyes in market that what competitors are doing, what people are saying about your product in order to build product range accordingly.  their prime responsibility lies with product that what shall we sell in next season, what should be its price, where should it be placed and how much margins we are gonna achieves from each segment of product and cluster of stores. after finalizing the product they closely liaison with buyers/planners that how much stock we have to buy, when have to buy, how much to sell and how much to stock at particular time. they are also responsible for executing the seasonal launch, take it along with buyers/planners and finally closing the season with careful exit strategy (markdowns). 

In the end evaluation is on that where did you close season in terms of Top & Bottom line, markdown to sales ratio and in some organisation they are also responsible for Inventory turnovers while in others this responsibility lies with buyers/planners. in some organization buyers and merchandisers are evaluated on all these KPI's collectively.

A merchandiser play vital role in company. In simple words, merchandisers make sure that goods are in right store,at the right time and the right price. You need to plan product ranges and stock plans with buyers, tracking stocks deliveries,staying aware of how competitors are performing. There a lots of things to do.

Role of merchandising in an organization is a complex one and it depends lot on Type of Organization , The strategic importance of merchandising department in the organization.  In short the key focus of department is to maximize the profits of organization by reducing the lead time between production and consumption of product ,Ensuring the dollars of the business are spent in most efficient way on right product with highest probability to sell with minimum costs . For easy understanding i can say role of merchandising department is to ensure that their is right product -at right price -at right place - at right time for buisness which will give maximum benefit to the business.
