well, if you study history then its purely non-fiction but when you study it through the imagination of a man of letter, then it becomes so interesting. Now its fiction. Pure historical events being non fiction cant be changed and as such devoid of human interest as they will remain the same, unchanged and thus will lead to boredom. But when the events are given literary coloring by a man of letters and tells the reader what could have happened otherwise, then the same historical events afford great and ever lasting pleasure to the reader. This is miracle of fiction. Shakespeare is popular for the same reasons.
