The most important communication skills for researchers to compete and be successful in today's competitive world; as follows;

  • communicate with brevity and clarity
  • you should be able to teach your methods and theories to an expert
  • know how to explain the importance of your work to anyone, expert or non
  • be able to give:1) an engaging multimedia presentation;2) a "chalk talk" (without any visual aids);3) a historical overview of the research legacy leading up to your research
  • avoid playing political tactics and the verbal tai chi of deflecting the question and turning it into the question you want to answer; instead answer the question that was asked of you
  • enunciate
  • define your acronyms
  • practice saying "I don't know"
  • be able to cite sources for your statements
  • remember the names of the authors whose research you cite (this is quite difficult but gets better the more your write and the longer you're in your field)
  • vary your speaking tone; it's easy to slip into researcher-monotone when nervous
  • slow down--you know your work inside and out, but your equations and graphs are immediately obvious and clear only to you; you need to give everyone else time to process both what you're saying and what they're seeing
  • if giving a slide presentation remove as many words from your slides as possible and just tell the audience what you want them to know; if they're reading your slides they're not listening to you and vice versa
  • visual design really does matter; spend a week or two getting to know about Edward Tufte, data-to-ink ratio, color schemes, etc. There are a lot of tools out there to do this stuff for you, e.g. Color Advice for Maps
  • if you use a color to represent a thing, use that same color for that thing in all your figures
  • be able to explain why you're doing what you're doing
  • try to make a cohesive story from start to finish to end (but don't hide any bumps along the way! Often the failures and troubles are just as, if not more, interesting)

1- Interpersonal Communication Skills2- Presentation Skills3- Writing Skills4- Personal Skills These are the most imporatant communication skills to be a charismatic communicator.

Coming from a teaching background, I would say communicating in a language that ca be adapted to a diverse background of individuals, is critical.  This entails having excellent spoken and presentation skills, as educators are always trying to communicate a complex topic in a more digestible manner.

Coming from a writing background as well, I would say, a strong ability to construct sentences that can deliver your message in a concise yet intriguing way.

Presentation skills are equally important, as on both platforms (education and writing) you are presenting information.

A researcher should have clear objective of the research.

The main job of the researcher is to convert the raw data into meaningful insight. Now a days presentations have shifted to info-graphics so he should have a clarity in mind how to present the data to senior management. In corporate sector most of the audience is not concerned with the methodology of research but they are more concerned about "What value  this research project will add to their business in a quantifiable amount"  it can be in the shape of increased sales volume or decrease in certain cost.
