First of all, in the Software industry there are Two different concepts when it comes to Software Products.

1.Propritory(Paid Software,We can use only if we purchase)

2.Open Source(Free under few circumstances)

Microsoft is well known for their paid products.But people purchase their product Because their software are AWSOME  That is why90% of computers around the globe have microsofts operating system.They are not free but they are too good.

When it comes to MICROSOFT OFFICE, If they start to support open documents, they believe it will

affect their BUSINESS

I think MS Office2007 opens some document files such as XML format
