Ceiling fan is a single phase induction motor, which doesn't have the property of self starting. Ceiling fan contains two windings, a starting winding and a running winding. capacitor is connected in series with starting winding. When energized, the starting winding creates a phase difference which leads approx.90 degree wrt running winding and thereby creates a starting torque. ceiling fan is a capacitor start, capacitor run induction motor.
