Which is more difficult, project planning or execution?

The PMBOK seems to speak to planning more than execution. Is that because most PMs know how to execute?

Both are equally challenging.

In planning you should foreseen or visualize the future scenarios and you should have  “THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX” mind.… Some will say if you done the planning very well then execution will be simple and anyone can do….. I agree to a certain extent but you should know that  Future is always up in the air. Every project will have its own headaches and last minute.com changes. In execution you won’t get much time to take a decision, You must be prompt and on top of everything. Which is not at all easy.

I would like to say –

Project Planning     20 % Physical  and80 %  mental stress.

Project execution  -  50 % physical  and50 % mental stress.

Everyone here claims project planning more difficult than execution. But to me it is vice versa. For planning, we need3 or4 talented and experienced persons to sit together in an air conditioned room and start planning, keeping in view all good strategies and available resources. They will arrive at a doable plan after some brain storming and critical discussion. They will handover this plan to project team and then go to bed. Now the project team responsible for execution has to assure availability of all man, material and financial resources to complete the project within planned deadline and assigned budget. This is always an uphill task, as all resources are not provided by owners/clients/financiers within time. Then there may be climate hindrances (like rains, storms, lightning, extreme weather conditions etc), equipment breakdowns, safety issues, theft cases, skirmishes across manpower, labor strikes, budget limitations and a host of unforeseen problems. Project executers have to face all of these difficulties to keep the project on track. They sacrifice their sleep, home-life comforts and even health to comply the plan and if there is some slackness, then they have to squeeze themselves for a recovery plan. Moreover, every big gun is always pointing on them if there is a belated step. Planners never face suchlike hardships. So project execution is more tough and demanding than planning.

you can't select any one is difficulty

because the execution depends on the planning of the project

if you planned a project and if you find any find any changes in the planning at the time of execution it also affects execution in up coming days

It is only a matter of understanding, mastering and loving our job that makes it easy.

As long as we know our work thoroughly there is no reason that we can say it is difficult.

For me, both planning and execution are challenging stages of a project with different scope of works. It is not easy to plan if we don’t know the principles of engineering designs as well as not easy to execute a plan if we are not flexible enough to manage it.

Love and know our job then success will follow.

Project planning is more difficult than execution, Because when you plan you have to collect the maximum information in order to facilitate the execution.

Project planning is  more difficult than execution as it needs a lot of efforts to arrive at an agreeable schedule.Planning gives a road map  without which execution will be impossible.

In every discipline Planning is  70% and execution is30%. when we execute our plan the, practical circumstances are inevitable. You should have solid operational team to work efficiently according to the plan. Improvising will be key factor in a project in both ways.

Project Planning is more difficult than execution as you have to be very much precise and have to consider all the possible aspects and that requires lots of expertise. I can't say that execution is not difficult because some time you are stuck with some thing which during planning activity was estimated in some %age but after wards due to the change in policies ( Govt. or geo political changes) made difficult the things to be done as expected.

In short, comparatively planning is more difficult than execution (except otherwise).

It must be planning .. when planned well the execution could be done by anyone!

That's why companies invest in consultation companies to do the planning for them and then they follow the steps.

Best of luck!

Project planning is crucial and very vital in most projects. I believe if planning is carried out in a thorough recursive manner to ensure that gaps are fixed, then when the execution phase begins after the logical design is done then i assume with the right people execution goes easy. Project planning is more stressful than execution.....mostly.
