I think the solid is the best option for normal3d objects and for complex3d objects you must to choose surfaces..... :)

If you need to make any simple object you can make by Poly (Solid) if there are some detail and shape is complex try to use modifiers. In my point of view Surface should be the last option due to the heaviness and detail work.
