Dear Joseph,

Generally speaking in Western Europe this is due to the high cost of labor and associated taxes. Taxes in recent years have gone up even further for the employer. Personally I see added value in employing people with a wealth of experience and the overall staff pool should reflect the community. Kind regards, Onno

Since you have not clarified whether it is a store / office job, I will answer in general.

1. Retail environment is very dynamic and new concepts/ technologies are always coming into play which50+ people are unaware of.

2. The job could involve extensive travelling in different markets spread over multiple countries which elder people may find difficult to cope with.

3. Companies spend a lot of money on Training the staff and they look for someone who can stay with them over a longer period of time.

4. In store environment, most of the time staff have to work standing when dealing with customers or arranging merchandise on the floor.

5. The hours are long for the staff working in the store and people near50 may find this difficult

6. Older people are more likelier to have health related issues resulting in absenteeism.
