Will totally depend on your mentality and specific likeness.
As far as myself is concerned, I prefer working in a silent environment which could never break or divert my concentrations, but I have seen many of my colleagues, which can not even think about working without some music along with.
So it's not necessary, will only depend on your likeness or dis-likeness.

Hello George Durzi, Greetings! Interesting Topic! I decide based on the Circumstances, Project Requirement and Work Environment.
1.
It depends upon the kind of Work / Projects I am involved into.
2.
If the requirements needs Attentiveness, then I would not Play Background Music to stay focused.
3.
Background Music will certainly Improve Creativity while Designing but it can also Affect Creativity while Designing.
One should always consider Positive and Negative aspects in all parts of our Career, Life and Business.
I liked this Topic!

I think this is not only for graohic designers , it's almost for all designers & artists.
And of course each designer has their own preferable background music.
The idea of background music is getting the designer in a relaxed, tension-free mode and so is able to preform better, think clearer..etc.
Distraction and unfavourable environment/sound/noise is highly resented by all designers, however some designers succeed in overcomming this, but most doesnt much.

yes of course, from a personal experience ..
Music is life ..
it gives you creativity and power to acheive

Music does get my creative juices flowing.
And I usually have the right type of music for a particular kind of job.
For luxury brands, I listen to classical and opera.
That gets me in the mood for the finer things in life.
For automobile and sport apparel accounts, I plug into some hard rock/heavy metal for a little edgy dynamism.
For brands targeting kids, I listen to cartoon soundtracks.
And whenever I have overtime and/or need to get a ton of work done right away, I put on some Rolling Stones -- always gets the job done.
=) Music helps me read as well.
Comic books, definitely something rock and heavy.

Greetings,

I would say it depends on an individual if to have background music while designing or to do any kinda work. Some can focus more when BGM is played and some cannot concentrate on work when there is BGM. When it comes to creativity, the type of music one hears or listens matters. If a lullaby is played, obviously anybody would feel sleepy and when a rock/pop is played that might make one dance instead focusing on creativity/work. So BGM's effect on an individual's work/creativity depends on the type of music and one's ability/reaction towards it. :)
