Reinforced concrete is concrete in which reinforcing bars or other types of reinforcement have been integrated to improve one or more properties of the concrete.

Concrete is good in Compression state and weak in Tension. For both Compression and Tension reinforcement is provided to strengthen it to take enormous loads and have a composite structure.

Reinforced concrete is a modern day way to produce high caliber and complex buildings with combination of Columns, Beams and Slabs.

Reinforced concrete is a composite material of concrete and steel. Concrete alone, performs very well with compression forces but it doesn't with tension. Steel performs in both cases.

We reinforce concrete with bars of steel to obtain a composite material that performs in compression and tension cases.

basically , Concrete is perfect for resisting pressure but cannot resist draught very good. Steel can take draught easily. So put in a mechanical problem the concrete on the pressure site and the steel rebar on the draught site and you have a perfect combination .Also Concrete and steel work together perfect (E. modulus) and the incased steel is protected by the concrete.

Perfect combination

Its the mixture of concrete, plasticisers and reinforcement(rebars n stirrups) designed and constructed in such a way to withhold all the dead and live forces and to sustain during the seismic activity without causing any major deformities during the event.

Concrete is a brittle material, it is good in compression but weak in tension, when subjected to tensile stress, it breaks without significant deformation (Strain= change in dimension/original dimension) and consequence is a suddenly collapse.

Steel is equally good in compression and tension, it is good in withstanding compressive and tensile forces.

Therefore reinforcement steel or mesh of steel wire used as a tension material is used in concrete structure to strengthen and hold the concrete in tension = RCC

Reinforced concrete is an engineering analysis and design where concrete is considered not to carry tension stress. So Steel reinforcement is added to the tension area of the concrete to support the tension stress carried by the beam or flexure member. There are two type of reinforced concrete first the singly reinforced where steel is added only in the tension area, second is the doubly reinforced where both tension and compression area of concrete is reinforced with steel, both type must achieve ductile failure.
