Outline the shape using the marquee or selection tool. Alternatively if the shape is one colour and easily distinguishable you should be able to use the magic want to highlight around it.
Once you have a selection around your shape, simple right click and layer via copy for a copy of the shape in just a layer while retaining the original image or layer via cut to extract the shape from the original image.
