I don't like distance education, but in some countries like Australia this is an only alternative
Distance education or learning has many pros and cons like many other systems. It has been gaining more and more popularity through out the globe. Moreover it's no more limited to conventional education as it is now inclusive to most of the professional short and long courses of certificate, diploma and degree levels.
Time and money saving is the top most benefit of distance learning especially for working class. They can upgrade their qualifications in a comfortable manner in less time and less expenses.
On the other hand the authenticity of skills acquired by distance learning is sometimes challenged by the experts in certain fields as the learner faces ambiguity in certain cases which is a great hurdle in achieving the highest level of confidence.
Pros very most of the negatives I say this from personal experience
