Most of Adobe products are constructed on the the same concept: Layers. If you understood this concept you can go through Photoshop, Illustrator, Aftereffects easily, then you will need to know the tools in the toolbar then thee filters, which is the easy part.
To understand the Layers concept, you can imagine if you want to draw a flower, and you are using totally transparent slides, you can draw the colored leafs on a transparent, then draw the stem on another transparent, then place both transparents on the top of each other, you will have the full flower drawing.
This can help you change the color, size, shape of the leafs without touching the stem layer :)
