The power factor of the home is generally OK. The main issue occur in power factor of the industrial load, because of the inductive loads used in industries.

Its up to you that how much you are consuming, we will see reduction in power use with cold weather in neutral areas, its up to us that how much we save electricity, don't lit the bulb of all rooms in your house, only lit where it is necessary, if you have normal halogen bulb, then you can change it to CFL and if you pay more then you can change it to LED, similarly, if you are using window air conditioner then you can use centralize air conditioning system to reduce the power consumption (in case of daily more than10 window AC use) otherwise individual use is better if the users are less.

So, whether you call it economical or luxurious, but it is a fact that we should save the power.

No as if you are using single phase supply system it is not recommended besides the domestic load does not contain high value of induction or capacitance

Also try to use inverter based Air-conditioning systems as they work on almost unity PF Value if you can afford its maintenance & spare cost besides they pay you well over a period of time due to their higher efficiency
