Be aware of "evergreen" topics.  Meaning, choose topics that are timeless.  For example, writing about energy conservation tips appeal to a huge audience because of its constant usefulness.

It all depends on the will to adapt and change. A writer is never the same person; he is to embody numerous personas and write in as many voices as he can so as to achieve longevity for their work. One is expected to fathom the various subtle nuances that every distinct psyche has and be able to present them in an appealing way, hence allowing the reader to delve deeper into the actions. 

More scientific or relatively objective genres necessitate a different effort and that fall more into research, observation and analysis.
