For creative writing/reading I do like ornate style - it can draw you into the story and the style helps the imagination to picture every little detail the storyteller is describing. Visually ornate style is pleasing to the eye and looks artistic.

When reading factual information, I prefer simple style.

Fancy diction is effective when listening to e.g. cd books.  Listening to the speaker using fancy diction again draws the reader into the world of the writer/author/storyteller.
