Thank you for the invitation:

Blocks are one object where as groups are a selection of objects that are joined together but can still be modified seperatly

Block is a symbol, you can transform any part of your drawing in a block with BLOCK command: select objects, assign a name of block and insertion point. Block is store in "Block table" and can insert in your drawing with INSERT command.

While group as Mr. Walf said are a selection of objects joined together

I agree with Mr Wolf Klaas Kinsbergen...

Blocks are individual drawn items like a gear or other components of a motor

Group are several components/Blocks chained/joined together ... you may have several groups which can be exchanged in a motor ... this will save time when you have motors with different PS/Kilo Newtons/Kilo Watt... (power ratings) and only a few components have to be exchanged.

Blocks is a symbol and individual drawn items which you can transform any part of your drawing, Block is store in "Block table" and can insert in your drawing. When you insert a block, you are inserting a block reference. The information is not simply copied from the block definition to the drawing area. Instead, a link is established between the block reference and the block definition. Therefore, if the block definition is changed, all references are updated automatically. Every drawing file has an invisible data area called the block definition table. The block definition table stores all block definitions, which consist of all information associated with the block. It is these block definitions that are referenced when you insert blocks in your drawing.

A group is a saved set of objects that you can select and edit together or separately as needed. Groups provide an easy way to combine drawing elements that you need to manipulate as a unit. You can create them quickly and with a default name, or you can use the Group Manager to assign a name from the start. You can change the components of groups as you work by adding or removing objects. In some ways, groups resemble blocks, which provide another method of combining objects into a named set. For example, the groups you create are saved from session to session.

Block is a locked object we use as a template, but we have to make it copy the times we need in the drawing.

Group is set of objects that kept together for ease but each object can be edited separately.

Blocks are single entities it will have only one base point, Blocks are very useful when we need the same assemblies to another drawing,. it can be imported to another drawing using Design Centre and Block insert command.

Groups are just selections. When we select an entity on the group, all entities related to the group will be selected.

Block is an element you can't do any modifying on it until you unblock it

Group is confluent elements together that any modifying affect  all of them at once

Unlike blocks, groups cannot be shared with other drawings.

Siberian 23rd Jan 2007, 01:27 pm Can anyone tell me how a group (made with the 'group' command) differs from a block? Regarding performance, would it be best to have a lot of groups or a lot of blocks?

happyunited 23rd Jan 2007, 05:08 pm blocks are best, you cant insert groups into other drawings nor modify them in a draw you kind stuck with what you have grouped unless you ungroup modify it and then re group. blocks all the way

Boro Nut 25th Jan 2007, 12:10 pm On the other hand you seldom hear of blocks selling out a world tour. Boro Nut

rkmcswain 25th Jan 2007, 01:33 pm Can anyone tell me how a group (made with the 'group' command) differs from a block? Groups are local to the current drawing. Blocks can be shared between drawings. Blocks are always selected as a single object. Group selection can be toggled on and off. Groups are good for "grouping" objects together that you might want to select more than once (to save you from having to pick many objects over and over), but they don't survive a WBLOCK or copy/paste. If you are drawing something that may be used again somewhere else, make it a block.
