What type of sources and historians did you use on your dissertation?

I must write a dissertation on historical people events, but first I need to understand the difference between dissertation and thesis?

I didn't do a dissertation, my sources consist of personal experiences dealing with schools through my children and nieces. The fact that we have a special needs child in the family and the endless meetings with schools to get him on the right track was better than any lesson taught in school. I was able to see things that even today teachers don't get.
