How do I be great at operations research?

From my point of view a good operations researcher must be train in statistical methods for interpreting large amounts of data and detect any deviation in repeatability of processes to propose solutions or improvements therein.

Math knowledge but not very advance, be familiar with quantitative methods, do a lot of practice in Linear Programming and Integer linear programming.
