It actually differs from company to company & it's HR policies
To some extent, most companies prefer knowledge & expertise (Experience) in the related Industry. But, it's not limited to as end of the it's based on the Individual & how he would justify his position compared to others. :-)
In my humble opinion , its not applicable . ıts so restrictive for a talented Marketing person to work only in one industry . I m a marketer and I have been in Marketing positions in Banking , construction and fmcg industries so I m not a monodimensional marketer . A genuine marketer is someone flexible with a very large skills set adaptable to every industry .
in my opinion i will divided it into two answers when you are talking about fresh graduate it isn't applicable as they can have a talent in this field.if it is about experience one no as they can haven't the talent but they have the experience to know how this done.
