by Don Mathis , Law Enforcement Officer , Tarrant County College District

I have been in Law Enforcement for over30 years and have held every job imaginable.  What I did was to find a mentor who had years of police service and who displayed a high ethical work demeanor.  I learned from him and soon, I developed and acquired the necessary knowledge and know how to do a good job.  At that point I was only a good police officer but I had to find a way to improve myself even more, so I watched other officers do their job and took from them their best and ignored everything else.  I studied and took every law enforcement continuing education class I could find and worked hard.  After a while just just realize that being a police officer is really just serving the public good the best you know how.  Ethics by my definition is - "Always doing the right thing when no one is looking."  If you do that then you are on the right road.  Hope this helps...
