Traditionally speaking, marketing is paid advertising and PR is free coverage. Marketing focuses on the market and building sales; PR focuses on relationships and building trust

Public Relations: They are the relations that are between your organization and the community you're serving. They are formed by saying what good will you do for the community you're in and they can be formed by sponsoring a social event in the community.

Advertising: A way of telling the masses your have a product that satisfy a certain need they have. Of course, letting more people know about your product means increasing the chance of increasing your sales.

Advertising is creating paid announcements to be promoted through different types of media including online, print, TV, out-of-home and radio. PR, on the other hand, is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organisations and the public. PR is great for building a connection with your audience and promoting your key messages, consumers are more likely to believe and take note of something written in an article, rather than an advertisement that has been paid for.

This may not be directly related but I think its worth mentioning.

The advent of social media has blurred the lines between social media and PR. This has forced the traditional offline advertisers (newspapers and tv stations) to introduce native advertising.

Native advertising simply presents adverts as a piece of news. This even makes it more confusing to differentiate them.

PR is the a bigger train for information transportation compared to advertising because even when some multi-national companies have their own advertising department, what they give the public is controlled and can be used over and over again,PR is the life of the firm in the eye of the customers. they are the connection  between the customers and the firm at large, more so the PR department as said early is the information desk of the firm and their responsibilities also includes availing information to the staff as they do also to the customers..

Public Relations, advertisement and Marketing are quite different terms. they are often used in the same sense in general, but there is so much difference among these termS. as far as the difference between the PR and Advertisement is concern, the main difference between them is company and product. both publicize; PRs Publicize company while advertisement is the publicity of a product via different channels( Media, Social Media, advertisement boards, pamphlets etc.,)moreover, advertisement is the task of  an Advertising agency, especially on Mass Media, whereas, Public relationing is done by a Public Relation Officer(PRO).
