Scalar Chain refers to the chain of superiors ranging from top management to the lowest rank. The principle suggests that there should be a clear line of authority from top to bottom linking all managers at all levels.

Scalar chain is the formal line of authority which moves from highest to lowest rank in a straight line.

That refers to an organization 's management model too much stcik to vertical hierarchy

which is arraged  like a ladder and rigid like a stiff  chain.
