the main deferent in UPS operation is that the inter active unit in normal condition, in the interactive UPS, the units is working on bypass, that means that the rectifier is feeding the batteries and charging them, and there is a DC voltage on the inverter itself, however he inverter is in OFF position which means it isn't giving power at the output, but the bypass is working and it is feeding your load, when the power is switched off the inverter start to work and drain power from the batteries, this means there will be a very small interruption on the load when the mains fail, however it is very economical due to the fact that the inverter efficiency is lower than the bypass.

for the Online units, the inverter is always working, and it is feeding the load, the rectifier feed both the batteries and the inverter and the bypass is switched off, when mains fail the batteries feed the inverter, bypass won't work unless there is problem in the unit or someone switch off the inverter.
