Engineers are searching for an alternate and cheap (than steel) material to use in concrete instead of steel. In India, bamboo has been used successfully. The life of such structures can only decide the suitability.

No because  the steel has adhesive bond with concrete and the concrete is good in compression but weak in tension while steel is weak in compression but good in tension. The Combination of both develop strenght and give a warning before collapse that is why in Reinforced concrete only steel is used and no other material is introduced till now.
