Managers don't have to be managed. Your work should speak to your manager.

If a manager needs managing then the company has a problem, the person is in the wrong position. 

Actions speak louder than words. Focus on the project and give the due respect to your manager too.

It's more important to manage your project (work) as employee's performance are appraised on their performance. But give due respect to your manager as well.

It depends to whom you are dealing with what is his EQ level , but better to manage both.
