What is the best way to motivate your team?

I've got some good feedback about leading and motivating multicultural teams around the globe, and there are at least a few things that are essential:1) You need to communicate both at individual and team level frequently.
Communicating means both speaking and listening.
Don't avoid difficult topics, but remember to keep a positive and constructive spirit all the time.2) You need to be100 % honest in whatever you say or promise.3) You need to draw a picture of the future of your team2-3 years from now (i.e.
where do you want to be) and link all the efforts of your team to that vision.4) Everybody needs to have his job description, but even more importantly, tangible objectives for the next6-12 months that you agree and review together.5) Ideally there should also be monetary incentives linked to those personal objectives, but also to the overall success of your team.6) Treat your people, their personal needs and opinions with respect.
In the end they are all adults.
If you empower your people to use their own brains and judgement and take initiative, your team will be really energized and your own job will be easier.7) Organize some fun and team building events every now and then.8) Keep zero tolerance for non-ethical behaviour.9) Don't count the hours your people spend at the office but focus on what they need to achieve and what tools and skills they need for this.10) Make sure everybody has a development plan that is updated yearly.
Classroom training is only one way of learning.11) Keep regular staff meetings and give public recognition to the teams and/or individuals who have reached something remarkable during the past month.

I agree.
The key to motivating your folks is to get to know them on a personal level, learn what motivates them, what their hopes and aspirations are.
Not every employee wants to move up the corporate ladder.
Every one has their own motivations for coming to and performing at work.
I also agree with the above stated comments that you have to lead your people to a positive, optimistic vision for the near and long term future.
Some leaders mistake listening for providing a shoulder to cry on all the time.
It is must to empathize with your people but you must in turn help them build themselves back up and grow beyond what challenges he/she may be facing in personal / professional life.

I have discovered that one good way to motivate a team is to provide an environment that fosters personal growth and development.
Most persons want to succeed and be good at what they are doing, providing an environment for them to achieve these, motivates them to contribute positively towards realizing the goals and objectives of the team.
