Managers' stakes are high as they have to manage multiple resources to achieve their goals and therefore their returns have to be high in the form of salary.

Good answers given by Mr. Ibrahim, and Mr. Venkataraman. Because managers take the responsibility, holds overall accountability so their position is at higher risk comparing to individual contributors. That's why they get paid higher than individual contributors...

Management is not an easy task as many people may think. You have to work hard to get there and when you do, you have to work hard to stay there and if you fail, you will fall hard.

A higher degree is not a ticket to management, but skills and qualifications are.

As a manager, you have the responsibility of the work you do and the work others do (your team). That is a very big risk.

Manager is supposed to be a leader as well as an all rounder of his team who can utilise minimum resources to maximise the output by leading and motivating his team members and is held liable for his team. There is no shortcut to experience so one who reached on that seat has some gets to be there and is rewarded accordingly.
