It seems this role is gaining significance world wide and companies have noticed its importance. Is it really important and required in all industries and mid-tier to big size companies?
It is important to be a visionary if you are involved in strategic thinking and I use the acronym VMOST in strategy planning which is Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategy and Tactics when everi I am engaged in strategic thinking session. In addition I also use a tool called "Participlan" which looks at convergent and divergent thinking of the group. In essence Strategic thinking should be left to executive level managment because the minute you include middle managers and operations managers your session becomes an operationa meetng rateher than a strategic thinking workshop. Strategic thinking is regarded as Higher level forward thinking. Example: Where do we see ourselves20 years from now and how will we get there is a question. then we work on working towards that vision as a vision should never be an easy vision to achieve it should almost be out of reach but constantly striving for it. Its like when be talk about needs, which are cyclical. Every time you fullfill a need it is replaced by another need.
