The main advantage of P6 is that it is much more flexible to use when it comes to organizing activities. Unlike Primavera3, where you need to manually enter the category one by one, P6 works much like MS Project in that you could highlight all of the items you need to group together and choose your predefined category. With one click, you could change the category as many as you like. When you are dealing with thousands and thousands of items (my max was about11,300 items from contracts that keep on adding to one contract number), it would make sense and a lifesaver to have this kind of feature.
Also, One of the advantages of P6 is that it runs on64-bit machines, which means the operation could be done much faster. My client requires our schedules to be cost-loaded because it is the one used for invoicing so it's very criticial that I match each activity with the correct cost. And since entering costs is not a walk in the park when you are using Primavera, making a mistake can drive you crazy if the total cost does not match the project cost. I used Primavera3 (because we could not afford P6) and it was such a pain when it comes to tallying the cost because it took so much time (subtotals of subcategories. You can figure it out) to calculate and in the end, it returns an incorrect total. I can tell you that you can never find anything more frustrating. On the other hand, P6 could also take some time, but it is significantly much faster, which means much easier to correct mistakes.
There is no argument that P6 is definitely better than Primavera3 but my only gripe is that the license check and installation are such a pain. And don't get me started about the price. By the way, you can get Primavera3 for free these days because they are terminating all supports for it.

P3 is the solid base and need to take more training and study but P6 id more user friendly and flexible for the beginers too.
