Creativity will be an essential tool in getting recognition, a degree that focuses on screen-writing, film production etc will also be extremely useful. One of the best things if you are serious about it is to contact film makers, see what they are looking for as they will be the ones you will work for/with. Also, don't discredit yourself, present yourself as if you are already knowledgeable in the field - you can learn how to do things later. But if I was you, i'd definitely do a degree in film studies or something similar.
