I have not taken the PMP Certification and therefore cannot answer you this question.  My experience is based on my German apprenticeship in Mechanical Drafting /Design and working with Project Managers in large pharmaceutical projects.

A Certification should show that one understands the concept, but passing a test is not a guarantee you are getting a good Project Manager. I have found most young graduates need additional training which can be frustrating  till they understand what is needed in the business world is not the same what they have been taught

I'm still preparing for it and the reason behind my wish to take the exam is that it's never a waste of time to challenge your abilities and prove your knowledge. plus without such you'll never reach success.

Certification helps in understanding key concepts as well as relating them to your everyday project mangement practice.

It also helps you to get identified as a prospective candidate in casse you are on the lookout for new jobs.

Certification is always good to get your resume screened or considered. I am not a big fan of certifications, but I am sure it will help you execute things in your wrokplace.

For getting certifications like PMP or CSM, you need to learn process and tools and then appear for the exam and pass. But I would rate a project manager as best when he could really apply those things in work that he learned during his certifications.

Now a days agile has taken over than Waterfall, PMP is becoming lessattractive..PMI-ACP is getting more hits..

So to answer your question, PMP certification helps you to get your resume or candidature considered, but it can become beneficial at workplace only if  the practices PMI suggested can be  applied /implemented in your project.

For me, I have not done PMP.

But for sure, getting certified is a plus in your CV.

On the other side however, it is not necessary that a PMP certificate holder will do the job better than a PM without a PMP certificate. The expertise got from managing projects along with a PMP course is better than a PMP certificate without expertise.
